Back pain is an all-too-familiar problem ranging from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp incapacitating pain. Back pain is considered to be one of the most common medical problems. It affects eight out of ten people at some point in their lives. It can come on suddenly from an accident, a fall, or improperly lifting something too heavy, but it can also develop slowly as a result of poor posture or age-related changes in the spine.
Although most back pain usually goes away on its own in a few days, it may sometimes last for several months. Taking over-the-counter pain relievers and resting can help. However, staying in bed for more than one or two days can make it worse. If your back pain is severe or doesn’t improve after three days, you should call your health care provider. You should also get medical attention if you have back pain following an injury.
During the month of August remember your back each day. Sit correctly, lift properly, and perform a comfortable back stretch or strengthening exercise.
